BOSTON, Mass. – Two home runs, one in each contest, by senior Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y.) led the Brandeis Judges' softball team (3-3) to a pair of wins over the Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-8) in the Black & Gold's home opener Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: BRANDEIS 4, WENTWORTH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Judges took an initial 1-0 edge in the opening inning as a single by sophomore Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif.) drove home a scorer.
- Wentworth got themselves in scoring position in the fourth inning, however, suffered a final strikeout on the third out with the bases loaded.
- Brandeis extended their lead to 2-0 in the seventh inning as a double by Manes drove home another base runner. Later in the inning, a home run by senior Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y.) with a runner on base pushed Brandeis' advantage to 4-0.
- In a quiet game for the offense, sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) kept the Leopards in it for much of the contest, striking out twelve batters in the circle.
GAME TWO: BRANDEIS 11, WENTWORTH 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Judges took a 1-0 edge in the first inning on a single before the visitors opened the game wide open in the fifth inning as a single, two walks, and a sacrifice fly with multiple runners on base drove home four more runs, marking a 5-0 score.
- Wentworth dwindled the deficit to one as a double by freshman Brianna Miller (West Haven, Conn.) ran home a score by sophomore Sydney Miccile (Holliston, Mass.), marking a 5-1 score. Later in the inning, a single by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) drove home runs by Miller and graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.), cutting the deficit to 5-3.
- Brandeis slowed the Wentworth roll in the sixth inning, pushing their lead to 11-3 with the 6-0 run capped by a double from sophomore Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif.) and a home run from Nash.
- Junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) led the Leopards' effort in the circle, striking out a batter while Pettenger and Miccile both registered two hits for Wentworth.
