BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (19-13, 7-2 CCC) continued their hot stretch into Sunday, besting the University of New England Nor'Easters (8-22, 4-8 CCC) by 6-2 and 8-4 scores in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
With the win, the Leopards extend their win streak to five and have earned wins in nine of their last eleven tilts.
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 6, UNE 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards put two runs on the board in the first inning as a home run by junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) with a runner on base put the Black & Gold ahead early, 2-0. Wentworth added to their lead in the second inning as a sacrifice fly drove home a run by junior Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.).
- The Leopards extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning on a single by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) before the Nor'Easters cut the lead to 4-2 as a double by freshman Emma Michaud (Winslow, Maine) drove home two runs in the fifth inning.
- Wentworth regained their four-run lead in the seventh inning, first with a single by senior Annabelle Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.) driving home a run before a sacrifice fly later added to the lead, 6-2.
- Graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) led the Leopards with three hits while Rowe and Medalia each picked up two RBI. Sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) continued her dominant stretch in the circle, striking out four and surrendering four hits in her eleventh win of the season.
GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 8, UNE 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A ground out by sophomore Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) resulted in an early run scored for the Leopards in the opening frame before a double by Medalia later in the inning plated another run, extending the Leopards' lead to 2-0.
- An Igawa single with two runners on in the second brought home another run, pushing the lead to 3-0 before another Igawa single two innings later plated another run, marking a 4-0 score.
- UNE cut their deficit in half in the fifth inning on a ground out followed by a single from senior Becca Dumont (Melrose, Mass.) drove home two scores, marking a 4-2 game.
- A Pettenger double brought home another run in the sixth inning, pushing the lead to 5-2 before two sacrifice flies later in the inning extended the score to 7-2 in favor of Wentworth.
- A single by Dumont combined with an error drove home to scores for the hosts in the seventh inning, cutting UNE's deficit to 7-4, but a single for the Leopards with two runners on drove one home in the back half of the frame, marking an 8-4 final score.
- Junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) led Wentworth with three hits while Igawa tabbed four RBI. Rowe led the Leopards in the circle, striking out three across five innings of work.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards have won six straight against the Nor'Easters.
