WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (1-5) earned their first win of the season Wednesday morning, toppling Chatham (2-4) in five innings by a 12-2 score. The Leopards came up short to Saint Vincent (4-4) in their ensuing tilt, a 12-8 defeat.
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 12, CHATHAM 2 (FINAL – 5 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the bases loaded in the top of the first frame, the Leopards struck three runs on the board as a double from Linnea Carlson drove home all three baserunners. In the back half of the inning, the Cougars cut the deficit to 3-2 as a single with two runners in scoring position plated both.
- Wentworth stretched the lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning as a double by Kelsey Medalia plated all three runners. Chatham threatened the score in the third inning with the bases loaded, however, Julie Schriver struck out three batters in a row to end the threat.
- The Leopards added another six runs in the fifth inning, highlighted with a triple from Katie Kranz and singles by Kyla Igawa and Abby Delia. Kranz and Lexi Lefkowski led the offense with two hits apiece as the team collectively picked up ten. In the circle, Schriver earned the win, striking out five in three innings. Julia Malowitz earned the save, giving up no hits and striking out two in two innings of work.
SERIES NOTES:
- Wentworth leads the all-time series, 2-0.
GAME TWO: SAINT VINCENT 12, WENTWORTH 8
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bearcats rattled off seven straight runs in the first inning, capitalizing on a double and two singles. Wentworth cut the deficit to 7-1 in the second inning as a Kranz single drove home a run by Lefkowski.
- Saint Vincent added to their lead in the third inning, pushing the score to 12-1 with the help of a double by Alyssa Henderson. The Black & Gold cut the deficit to 12-5 in the back half of the frame as singles by Jess Rowe and Lauren Trostel drove home two runs apiece.
- Wentworth clawed back in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a Rowe triple and a Lefkowski double, to mark a 12-8 score. The Bearcats retired three of Wentworth's four batters in the seventh inning, holding on for a 12-8 win.
- Schriver, Malowitz, and Maddy Longoria split time in the circle while Lefkowski led the offense with three hits on four at-bats.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Leopards Head Coach Erica Castro now sits five wins shy of 100 in her career.
