Softball Outlasts Emmanuel in Pair of Triumphs
Leopards outlast Saints, 7-6, in 10-inning marathon before taking a 9-3 decision in the second game; Julia Malowitz pitches eight-strikeout complete game in game one
BOSTON, Mass. – In a pair of non-conference affairs Saturday afternoon, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team outlasted the Emmanuel Saints in a 10-inning marathon in game one, 7-6, before toppling the opposition 9-3 in the second contest of the day.
With the two wins, the Black & Gold improve to 8-8. The Saints slip to 2-12.
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 7, EMMANUEL 6 (FINAL – 10 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the bases loaded in the third inning, Jess Rowe drove home a runner to give the Leopards an initial 1-0 edge. On the ensuing batter, an RBI single from Lexi Lefkowski drove home one of two runners in scoring position.
- Emmanuel clawed back and doubled up on the Leopards in the fifth frame, capitalizing on an RBI triple, RBI double, and two errors to run home four scorers.
- The Black & Gold knotted the score at four aside in the back half of the inning, first with a ground out from Rowe with the bases loaded driving home a run. Lefkowski grounded out on the next at-bat, still plating a run.
- The Saints picked up another two runs in the top of the ninth, first with a double by Molly Carnes plating a runner. Franscesca Pizzarella doubled to drive home Carnes later on, putting Emmanuel ahead 6-4.
- In the back half of the frame, Wentworth cut the deficit to one on an RBI single from Lefkowski, running home Kelsey Medalia to mark a 6-5 game. Linnea Carlson followed up with a double to run home Lefkowski, marking a 6-6 draw.
- The two teams juked it out in extras until a Katie Kranz single in the tenth shifted a runner to third. From there, a sacrifice fly from Quincy Bolduc plated a walk-off run by Abby Delia, earning Wentworth a 7-6 win.
- Katelin Howe paced the offense with three hits while Medalia ran home for three of the Leopards' seven runs. In the circle, Julia Malowitz pitched a complete ten-inning outing, fanning eight batters and surrendering nine hits.
GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 9, EMMANUEL 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With two runners in scoring position, the Saints sent one home on fielder's choice to second. However, after the score, Wentworth picked off the runner at second, ending the frame behind by just one run.
- The Leopards knotted the score in the back half of the second inning as a Kranz single drove home a score by Lefkowski. The Saints answered in the third inning as an RBI double by Taylor Chelak drove home a score, marking a 2-1 game.
- The Black & Gold knotted the score at 2-all on an RBI double by Kyla Igawa in the back half of the frame. Later on, an RBI double from Rowe drove home Igawa, marking a 3-2 edge for Wentworth, before a single by Malowitz with the bases loaded plated a pair of runs, extending the advantage to 5-2.
- An RBI double from Rowe in the fourth inning plated a run by Medalia, stretching the Leopards' lead to 6-2. Emmanuel clawed a run out of the lead in the sixth inning off of an RBI triple, marking a 6-3 score. However, the Leopards retired the next two batters to end the threat.
- The Leopards padded their lead with three runs in the sixth inning, including one of a double from Carlson, to grab hold of a 9-3 advantage. In the circle, Julie Schriver earned her fourth win of the season, striking out three batters and surrendering ten hits in a complete game.
- Offensively, Howe and Lefkowski paced the Leopards with three hits apiece. As a team, Wentworth notched 17 hits, with each of the nine blasting at least one of their own.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards have taken seven straight matchups between the two teams.
