Softball Completes Weekend Sweep with Two Wins Over Simmons
Leopards run their win streak to four with a sweep of the Sharks (14-6, 9-0); Jess Rowe drives in six runs on the day, including five in the second game
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team ran its win streak for four on Sunday afternoon as the Leopards swept Colleges of the Fenway rival Simmons in a non-conference doubleheader. The Leopards took game one, 14-6, before completing the sweep with a 9-0, five-inning win in the nightcap.
In game one, Lexi Lefkowski went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Julie Schriver picked up the win in the circle. For the Leopards in game two, Julia Malowitz spun a four-hit shutout, while Jess Rowe drove in five runs.
GAME ONE: Wentworth 13, Simmons 6
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With two outs in the top of the first inning, Kyla Igawa doubled and went to third on a Jess Rowe single. Lefkowski brought them both in with a two-run triple. Linnea Carlson's infield hit gave Wentworth a 3-0 lead.
- Simmons tied the game in the home half of the inning, thanks to an RBI triple from Lean Berdeen, who then scored on a passed ball. Trinity Payne singled in Teagan Buckley to even the score.
- The teams traded runs in the second inning. The Leopards took a 4-3 lead when Kelsey Medalia singled in Jenna Roche, who had singled and went to second on a groundout. In the bottom of the inning a sacrifice fly evened the score at 4-all.
- The Black & Gold put up four runs in the fifth inning, all coming with two outs. Katie Kranz tripled home Julia Malowitz and scored on a Roche single, while Medalia had a two-run single to score Katelin Howe and Roche. An RBI double by the Sharks in the bottom of the inning made it 8-5.
- Wentworth erupted for six runs in the sixth inning, as the Leopards took advantage of three Simmons errors in the frame. Kranz had an RBI single, Medalia drove in a run with a fielder's choice, Igawa drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Rowe drove in a run after reaching on an error, and Lefkowski had an RBI single.
- Coming in relief, Schriver improved to 5-2 on the season as she allowed two runs on five hits and struck out a pair. At the plate, in addition to Lefkowski, Medalia went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Howe, Carlson, and Roche each had a pair of hits.
GAME TWO: Wentworth 9, Simmons 0 (Five Innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Game two was all Wentworth as the Leopards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Medalia doubled and Igawa walked. Medalia moved to third on a Lefkowski flyout and both baserunners came around to score on Rowe's triple. Carlson reached on an error, which allowed Rowe to score.
- The Leopards put a single run on the board in the third inning as, with two outs, Igawa walked and scored on a Lefkowski triple, making it 4-0.
- Howe singled to lead off a five-run fifth inning and moved to second on a Medalia single. Igawa reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners at the corners before Lefkowski reached on an error to load the bases. Rowe followed with a three-run double, clearing the bases and making it 7-0. Carlson doubled in Rowe, and, with two outs, Kranz brought Carlson home to make it 9-0.
- Malowitz improved to 4-3 with her second shutout of the season. She faced just 18 batters, three above the minimum in the five-inning affair. At the plate, Medalia, Rowe, and Carlson each had two hits, with Rowe and Carlson combining for seven RBI. Igawa also drew a pair of walks and scored three times.

- Winners of the last four meetings, Wentworth leads the all-time series, 9-4.
