Softball Splits with Curry in CNE Openers; Howe Hits Century Mark
Leopards shut out Colonels 6-0 as Katelin Howe rings home her 100th career hit
MILTON, Mass. – In their conference opener Tuesday afternoon, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (11-9, 1-1 CNE) shut out the Curry Colonels (9-7, 2-2 CNE) by a 6-0 score in their Conference of New England debut before falling in the nightcap, 6-5.
In game one, Katelin Howe blasted her 100th career hit, becoming the 14th student-athlete in program history to reach the mark.
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 6, CURRY 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams juked it out in the early frames until the Black & Gold got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo homer from Jess Rowe. In the sixth, an RBI single from Linnea Carlson drove home Lexi Lefkowski, marking a 2-0 game.
- The Leopards extended their advantage in the seventh as a single from Lauren Trostel with two runners on plated one, marking a 3-0 score. Another Carlson single followed, plating an additional two runners, to mark a 5-0 game. From there, a sac fly from Jenna Roche ran home Carlson, stretching the advantage to 6-0.
- In the back half of the inning, Julie Schriver surrendered a double on the first at-bat but retired the following three to preserve her sixth win of the season. In a complete game, she struck out six batters, walked four, and allowed just six hits.
- Offensively, four Leopards registered a pair of hits while Carlson led the team with her three RBI.
GAME TWO: CURRY 6, WENTWORTH 5
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Colonels opened the scoring in the first inning as a double by Morgan Barmash plated a runner. In the second, Curry capitalized on an error with a runner scoring from second, pushing their advantage to 2-0.
- With runners on second and third, an RBI single from Trostel plated a runner, cutting Wentworth's deficit to 2-1 in the third. However, on the next at-bat, the Leopards were tagged out at second, ending the threat.
- The Leopards knotted the score and took a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning, first with an RBI single by Katie Kranz tying the score. From there, a fielder's choice combined with an error drove home Kranz before a single by Kelsey Medalia plated a run by Howe.
- A bunt for the Colonels in the back half of the frame scratched a run off the board, cutting their deficit to 5-3. In the fifth, an RBI single with the bases loaded plated one runner before shortly thereafter, another single drove home two baserunners, giving Curry a 6-5 edge.
- Wentworth threatened the score in the seventh as Lefkowski singled and made it to third on a pair of wild pitches. However, the Colonels retired the next two batters. In the circle, Julia Malowitz struck out three batters in five innings of work.
SERIES NOTES:
- Wentworth has won six of the last ten matchups between the two teams.
