Colby Wins Eighth Straight Game With 64-37 Win Over Wentworth
Mules use a late 21-6 run in the first half to break the game open
BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Rachel Mack (Augusta, Maine) and senior forward Allison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) each scored 14 points as the Colby women's basketball team won its eighth straight game with a 64-37 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.
After falling behind by a pair to open the contest, the Mules took
a 9-2 lead when Mack buried a jumper with 16:52 remaining in the
half. During the 9-0 run, Mack had four points, while junior
forward Julianne Kowalski (Montville, N.J.) added three.
Wentworth responded with a 7-2 spurt, keyed by five points from
senior guard Michelle
Fauci (Boxford, Mass.) and tied the game at 11-all on a basket
by freshman forward Morgan
Furman (Falmouth, Maine).
Over the next 11:06 Colby outscored Wentworth by a 21-6 margin to
take a 32-17 lead with 1:44 left in the half and would lead by 13
(32-19) at the break. Mack would have 10 of her points in the
first half while the Mules' defense held the Leopards to 26.7
percent shooting from the floor.
The second half saw Colby hold Wentworth without a field goal for
nearly eight minutes while extending its lead to as many as 30
points. The Leopards would shoot just 23.3 percent from the
floor over the final 20:00 and finished the game shooting 25.0
percent.
Mack added seven rebounds while Cappelloni hauled down six
caroms. Kowalski recorded a double-double with 11 points and
10 rebounds. The Mules outrebounded the Leopards, 49-31 and
scored 23 points off of 17 Wentworth turnovers.
The Leopards received 10 points and six rebounds from Fauci, while
Furman had seven points and six rebounds.
Colby improves to 12-1 on the season and resumes NESCAC play on
Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. game at Tufts. The Leopards fall
to 7-8 and resume TCCC play on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a game
against Western New England.
