Wentworth Falls to Colby-Sawyer, 63-47

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) scored 18 points while freshman forward Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) added 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks as the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team downed Wentworth, 63-47, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.

The Chargers held the Leopards without a point for the first 6:36 while jumping out to an 8-0 lead.  A DeSanty jumper with 12:18 remaining gave Colby-Sawyer a 10-3 lead before Wentworth scored the next seven points – with five coming from senior forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) – and trailed, 13-10, on a sophomore guard Ashley Conway (Danvers, Mass.) basket with 7:23 left.

Leading 19-15 with 3:15 to play in the half, the Chargers went on a 9-0 run to close out the half and led, 28-17, at the break.  Colby-Sawyer held Wentworth to just 16.7 percent from the floor (5-for-30).

Colby-Sawyer would lead by as many as14 on a Meserve layup with 18:21 remaining in the contest.  The leopards cut the lead to as few as eight on four occasions, including after a freshman guard Paige Newcomb (Topsfield, Mass.) basket with 12:55 to play.  However, that would be as close as the hosts would come as a 15-0 run put the Chargers ahead by 23 at 54-31.

Sophomore guard Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) dished out seven assists and had three steals, while junior forward Kaitlin Fifield (Warner, N.H.) had six points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and four steals.

Wentworth was paced by Kerr who had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Vallone had a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing a dozen rebounds in addition to blocking eight shots.  The Leopards sot 22.6 percent from the floor for the game but held a 48-41 rebounding edge.

With the win Colby-Sawyer improves to 13-10 overall and 9-3 in conference play.  The Chargers close out the regular season at Western New England on Saturday.  Wentworth falls to 9-15 (3-9) and ends the season at New England College on Saturday.
