BOSTON, Mass. - With just three seconds left in the game junior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass) sank a 3-pointer to propel the Curry Colonels to 46-43 victory over the Wentworth Leopards 46-43 in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Curry was led offensively by Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) with 13 points. Griffith also recorded a game high five blocks while grabbing six rebounds.
The Leopards were led in scoring by senior Ashley Conway (Danvers, Mass) with 14 points. Kendra Kerr (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded a double-double on the day, scoring 10 points and hauling down 10 rebounds. Kerr and Conway tied for a team high three steals apiece.
The first half would go back and forth with four ties and three lead changes. With the score tied 17-17 and just 3:00 left on the clock the Leopards would push the lead as high as eight before finishing the half leading 25-19.
Despite leading in the first half Wentworth only shot 33 percent from the field, while Curry was slightly better shooting 38 percent.
The second half would start out with the Leopards pushing the lead to 31-21 off a Conway 3-pointer. Wentworth would hold the lead in the second half, until three consecutive baskets by Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) put the Colonels up 36-35 with 6:22 left to go in the game. Fallon finished with 12 points, while sinking all four of her free throw attempts.
No team would be able to push the lead any further than three and with 1:45 left to go Kerr would sink a layup to tie the game at 43-43.
Assarian would bury the deep three as the game clock dwindled, pushing the Colonels to victory. All nine of Assarian's points came from behind the arc.
Griffith and Fallon led the offense with Kylie Beltz (Peqout Lakes, Minn.) just breaking double digits with 10 points.
Conway and Kerr were the two Leopards to reach double figures on the night with freshman Megan McLaughlin (Southington, Conn.) leading all bench scorers with six points.
Curry improves to an even 8-8 overall and 4-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. Wentworth dips two games below even on the year at 7-9, while falling to 2-7 in the CCC.
Wentworth is back in action with a home game Wednesday night. They tip off at 5:30 p.m. against CCC opponent University of New England. Curry will also be in action on Wednesday at 7:30 as they travel to Nichols College for a CCC matchup.
