BOSTON, Mass. – Seniors Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) and Rachael Camara (Fall River, Mass.) each recorded double-doubles to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's Basketball team snap a six-game losing streak with a 51-39 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action played at Tansey Gymnasium.
With the win the Leopards improve to 5-10 overall and 2-7 in league play while the Fighting Scots dropped their fifth straight to stand at 4-12 (0-9).
While neither team started the game shooting well, Wentworth took a six-point (10-4) lead with three minutes left and held the Fighting Scots without a field goal for the last 4:32 of the opening frame. The Leopards had a 10-4 lead after the first quarter.
Senior Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ended Gordon's stretch of not hitting a field goal at 11:43 as she brought the vistors to within three, however four straight points from Rogers put the Leopards ahead, 14-7, with 4:51 left in the half. Gordon pulled within a point on a freshman Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) basket with 24 seconds left but senior Megan McLaughlin (Southington, Conn.) responded with a basket with seven seconds left to give the hosts a three-point edge (22-19) at the break.
Consecutive baskets by sophomore Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) and freshman Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) gave Gordon a 23-22 lead with 7:00 left. Camara responded by hitting one of two free throws to even the score but Smith hit a layup a little over a minute later to put the Fighting Scots ahead by a pair.
A three pointer from Camara and basket from sophomore Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) put the Leopards ahead by three with 4:09 left and Wentworth led by six on two occasions, including when Sabino scored the quarter's final points, coming with 26 seconds left.
Sophomore Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) and freshman Francesca Matira (Ledyard, Conn.) put Wentworth ahead by 11 with 6:45 left in the contest and, despite pulling with eight on two occasions, the Fighting Scots would get no closer as a 7-1 Wentworth spurt put the game out of reach. The Leopards held Gordon to just 18.8 percent from the floor over the final 10:00.
Rogers had 14 points and rebounds while Camara added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sabino had seven points and seven rebounds and McLaughlin scored five points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out seven assists. Wentworth had a 49-41 rebounding advantage for the contest.
Freshman Olivia Stark (Arvada, Colo.) led Gordon with eight points.
Wentworth is at St. Joseph (Conn.) on Thursday night while Gordon hosts Roger Williams on Saturday.
