SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Commonwealth Coast Conference announced the 2015-16 Women's Basketball All-Conference and major award winners Tuesday afternoon. Student-athletes from eight of the ten CCC women's basketball teams earned All-CCC nods.
Western New England senior Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) was named the conference's player of the Year, while University of New England's Lauren Hayden (Chantilly, Va.) was named the league's defensive player of the year for the third-straight season. Hayden was also named the 2016 CCC Senior-Scholar Athlete. Curry freshman Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) was recognized as the rookie of the year. Additionally, UNE head coach Anthony Ewing earned league coach of the year recognition for the fourth time in his career and Gordon and Wentworth shared the team sportsmanship award.
Voting for the All-CCC teams and each of the major awards was conducted by the conference's 10 women's basketball head coaches following the conclusion of the regular season.
In addition to being named the CCC Player of the Year, Vujs was placed on the 2016 All-CCC First Team. Joining Vujs on the First Team are Endicott's Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.), Roger Williams' Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.), Salve Regina's Meaghan Harden (Sandwich, Mass.), and University of New England teammates Alicia Brown (Greenland, N.H.) and Meghan Gribbin (Windham, Maine).
The All-CCC Second Team consists of Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) from Roger Williams, Hayden and her UNE teammate Alanna Vose (Cushing, Maine), Wentworth's Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine), and Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) from Western New England.
Curry's Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.), Eastern Nazarene's Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.), Endicott's Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine), Roger Williams' Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.), and UNE's Olivia Shaw (Saco, Maine) make up the All-CCC Third Team.
Rogers earns her second straight All-CCC nod after being named to the third team as a junior. She averaged a career-best 14.5 points per game to go along with 8.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.9 steals per game during her senior campaign and had career highs of 28 points in a 53-41 win over Lasell on Nov. 18, 16 rebounds in a 52-49 win over Nichols on Dec. 5, and seven assists in a 58-33 win over Lesley on Nov. 21. She also had seven double-doubles this season. On Feb. 16 Rogers became the 11th Leopard women's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark for their career.
Starting 83 of the 101 career games in which she played, Rogers finished her career averaging 10.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.7 steals per game. She is tied for second in program history in games played, tied for fourth in blocked shots (115), eighth in rebounding (765), and 10th in scoring (1,032).
