BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H.) connected on 7-of-10 shots from the floor to help pace the Suffolk University women's basketball team to a 92-46 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.
With the win the Rams improve to 3-2 while the Leopards fall to 1-4.
After falling behind to start the game, Suffolk used a 14-6 run, capped off by a senior Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass. layup with 5:08 left in the quarter. Wentworth battled back to pull within a pair on a sophomore Michelle McCloskey (Madison, Conn.) jumper with 2:02 left in the frame and, again, with 1:27 left on a freshman Samantha Madden (Plainville, Mass.) jumper. A jumper with 31 seconds left from freshman Katelyn Rourke (Watertown, Mass.) and one of two free throws from Rourke with eight seconds left made it a 22-17 game after one quarter. Both teams shot identical 8-for-12 from the floor in the first 10 minutes.
The Rams outscored the Leopards 14-5 over the first 4:47 of the second quarter to take a 14-point lead on a Bourikas three pointer and used a 10-1 run late in the quarter to lead 49-26 at the half. Suffolk, which shot 64.7 percent in the second quarter, held Wentworth to 14.3 percent from the floor.
Suffolk outscored Wentworth 18-6 in the third quarter with all six of the Leopards' points coming off free throws. Four of those free throws came from sophomore Baylor Johnson (Greer, S.C.).
A layup by senior Kellie Messer (Hollis, N.H.) opened the fourth quarter and snapped a streak of 15:52 without a field goal for the Black & Gold, who also received five points in the quarter from McCloskey.
Two other Rams scored in double figures as junior Alexandra Nagri (Salem, N.H.) had 13 points and five steals and Rourke went 5-for-7 from the floor, scoring a dozen points and grabbing six rebounds.
Johnson had 12 points for Wentworth while McCloskey added eight.
The Leopards open Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday night against the University of New England.
