Wheaton Tops Women's Basketball

NORTON, Mass. – Sophomores Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) and Stephanie Mini (Topsfield, Mass.) both reached double figures in scoring, but it was not enough as the Wheaton women's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology 76-48 on Saturday afternoon.

Morton poured in 17 points for Wentworth (0-4), while Mini chipped in with 11 in the effort. Morton shot 7-10 from the line and picked up five boards while Mini had two steals and three boards.

Senior Abby Hamilton was named Tournament MVP for Wheaton (2-1), which went undefeated in the tournament, scoring nine points while picking up seven rebounds and shooting 3-7 from both the floor and the three-point line. Morton was named to the All-Tournament Team for Wentworth.

Wheaton held an 18-8 lead after the first quarter, before the Leopards settled in and scored 15 points in the second, led by Morton and six points from junior Emily Magasic (West Milford, N.J.). The Lyons continued to press offensively, holding a 40-23 advantage at halftime, a deficit which proved too large for Wentworth to overcome.

For the second straight game, senior Michelle McCloskey (Madison, Conn.) paced the Leopards on the boards with six rebounds, adding four points overall, while Magasic chipped in with eight points.

Wentworth hits the road for its next contest on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest against Emerson.
