Women's Basketball Defeats Nichols in Season Finale

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team scored a season-high 71 points in the 2018-19 season finale at Nichols College on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards downed the Bison by a 71-63 score, and shut the doors on the season with its most wins since the 2016-17 campaign.

Sophomore Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) led three Leopards in double figures with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor, and added five rebounds, three steals, and four assists in the victory. Classmate Stephanie Mini (Topsfield, Mass.) scored 15 points with six boards and four assists, while junior Emily Magasic (West Milford, N.J. booked 10 points with five dimes and six rebounds.

After an evenly matched first period where both teams scored 15 points apiece, the Leopards outscored the Bison 22-12 in the second quarter to hold a 37-27 lead at the break. In the second half, the Leopards used 45% shooting from long range, including a perfect 2-for-2 from Morton, and never surrendered the lead. Morton bucketed 10 points in the second half, while Magasic added seven, followed by six from senior Michelle McCloskley (Madison, Conn.) off the bench.

Overall, the Leopards went 10-of-21 from three-point territory – a season-best – paced by three each from Mini and senior Francesca Matira (Ledyard, Conn.).

The Bison were led by senior Mekaela Fthian-Giantonio, who dropped 16 points in her final collegiate game at Nichols. Classmate Rebecca Cleary and sophomore Shannon St. Lawrence each finished in double figures, scoring 12 points with 11 boards, respectively.
