Strong Third Quarter Boosts Women's Basketball to Best Start Since 2004

Brooklyn, N.Y. –  For the first time since 2004, the Wentworth women's basketball team boasts a 3-0 start to the season after a 79-64 non-conference victory at Medgar Evers on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, as Medgar Evers carried a mere one-point lead into halftime, 40-39.
  • Wentworth came flying out of the gates after the break, scoring 23 points on 50% shooting from the floor, while lockdown defense held the Cougars to just nine points in the frame. Freshman Isabella Perez (Homestead, Fla.) led the Leopards with seven points in the quarter and ignited a 13-4 run to gain a 10-point cushion, 56-46. The Leopards recorded five steals in transition led by two apiece from Perez and Magasic, while a three-pointer from senior Maya Spence (Georgetown, Mass.) capped a textbook quarter for Wentworth which held a 62-49 lead heading into the final ten minutes. Magasic gave Wentworth its largest lead of the game (71-53) with 5:34 left in the contest, as the booming third quarter ultimately deemed the Leopards untouchable in remainder of the contest.

 

THE SERIES

  • This was the first known meeting between the two teams.

 

NOTES

  • The Leopards are 3-0 for the first time since the 2004-2005 season.
  • Wentworth currently leads the Commonwealth Coast Conference in points per game (79.3) and ranks second in total points (238).
  • Magasic's 14 points marked a career-high for the senior.
  • Morton and Perez booked their first respective double-doubles of the season.
