Women's Basketball Scoops Up First Win in Home Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – Three players of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team recorded ten or more points while defensive play was strong for the team in their 53-38 win over the Hornets of Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth started the game on a 3-0 run thanks to a free throw made by sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) and a clean jump shot from sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.). The Hornets fought back to cut the deficit to 6-5 but a three-pointer by Amoddio extended the Leopards' lead to 9-5. With the Leopards ahead 14-8, senior Francesca Farrell (Stoneham, Mass.) sank a three-pointer to push the advantage to 17-8. One failed three-point attempt by the Hornets had the first quarter ending with a nine-point advantage to the home team.
  • Scoring went back-and-forth to start the second quarter. When the Hornets closed the gap, the Leopards responded. A jump shot from senior Adriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) kept the Leopards ahead by a 21-16 score. Sophomore Riann Fortin (Derby, Vt.) made a shot for the Hornets after Busbey hit another to make the score 23-18. Each team traded failed shot attempts, keeping the score at 23-18 in the Leopards' favor at the half.
  • A make from sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) got the Leopards ahead early in the third quarter in a 25-18 score. The two squads traded buckets while key points from Busbey and Amoddio kept the Leopards in front 29-23. A score by Foster extended the Leopards' lead by two. Foster hit another layup until the Hornets fought back to a 33-29 deficit to end the third quarter.
  • Wentworth started the final quarter off with a bang on a three-pointer from junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.), putting the host ahead 36-29. The Hornets went on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 38-35. Farrell hit a three-pointer to extend the Leopards' lead to 41-35. The points kept coming for the Black and Gold, including a three-pointer from Busbey, to put the hosts ahead 48-35. Wentworth collected a wealth of free throws to end the game ahead 53-38.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Wentworth was nearly 20% better at three-pointers, making seven of 23 for 30.4% while the Hornets shot 11.5% on three makes of 26 attempts.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight's matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
