Curry Defeats Women's Basketball in First CCC Action

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Cathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) scored a game-high 19 points for the Curry Colonels as they defeated the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team 64-41 on Wednesday evening in both team's first Commonwealth Coast Conference action of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Dunn scored the first layup of the game to kickstart a 5-0 run for the Colonels. Wentworth stopped their run shortly thereafter on a layup scored by sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.). After another two points by Dunn, senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) nailed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Colonels went on a 9-4 run to extend their lead to 16-9. Dunn and Busbey traded layups 18 seconds apart to bring the score to 18-11. The Colonels ended the quarter on a 5-1 run ignited by a three-pointer from senior Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.), giving the visitors a 23-12 lead after one quarter of play.
  • The Leopards started the second quarter on a 4-0 run with a layup coming from sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) to help bring the score to 23-16. The Colonels responded with a 16-3 run that was led by two three-pointers from sophomore Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) and freshman Nicole Moran (Framingham, Mass.) to bring the score to 39-18. Amoddio answered by nailing a three-pointer of her own to bring the score to 39-21. Amoddio hit a free throw and the Colonels shot for another two points, tallying the score to 41-22 at the half.
  • The third quarter started in a back-and-forth scoring affair as the two teams tallied buckets to bring the score to 50-28. The Leopards went on a 3-0 run thanks to a free throw made by senior Francesca Farrell (Stoneham, Mass.) and another two points from Amoddio to bring the score to 50-31. McCarthy and Dunn both nailed three-pointers while Foster scored on a layup to bring the score to 56-33 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
  • Wentworth started the final frame on a 5-2 that featured the first collegiate basket for freshman Tita Rana (Boston, Mass.), driving the score up to 58-38. Amoddio, Busbey, and sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) all scored on free throws while the Colonels made a handful of baskets, bringing the final score to 64-41.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Curry leads the all-time series 47-14 despite losing three of the last four meetings between the two teams.
