Women's Basketball Falls Short to Salve Regina

BOSTON, Mass. – Although three student-athletes of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team notched double-digit point totals, the team couldn't overcome the offense from the Seahawks of Salve Regina, resulting in a 79-50 defeat in Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game started in a back-and-forth scoring affair that featured opposing three-pointers from junior Olivia Martin (Hanson, Mass.) and senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) that eventually brought the score up to 5-5 after initial baskets on both sides. Salve Regina separated themselves by a 10-5 score until sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored five points, three from beyond the arc, and Busbey notched another three-pointer to put the hosts ahead 13-11. Senior Megan Henaghan (Whitman, Mass.) made a layup to knot the score at 13-apiece after one quarter of play.
  • The Seahawks started the second frame on a 5-0 run until Amoddio sank another three-pointer to bring the score to 18-16. The two teams traded baskets until the Seahawks gained separation with a 25-20 lead. Again, the two ball clubs traded baskets, bringing the score to 27-22. A layup from junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.) brought the deficit to three in a 27-24 game. Salve Regina scored two more baskets until a three-pointer from sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) slowed their roll to a 31-27 score. The Seahawks ended the first half on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 37-27.
  • Salve Regina opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run, rising the score to 48-27. David made another layup and Henaghan matched it, lifting the score to 50-29. Salve Regina then went on a 10-0 run that featured three-pointers from Martin and senior Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) to bring the score to 60-29. Wentworth answered with a 5-0 run that featured a three-pointer from sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine), bringing the score to 60-34. The Seahawks scored another basket and Carroll made two free throws to get the score to 62-36 after three quarters of play.
  • The Seahawks started the final quarter of a 7-2 run to bring the score to 69-38. Foster then nailed a layup to bring the score to 69-40. The two teams traded baskets until Martin drilled two three-pointers in a row to extend the Seahawks lead to 77-44. The Seahawks sank two free throws after Amoddio made a layup, bringing the score to 79-46. Busbey made two free throws and Foster scored on another layup to tighten the final tally to 79-50.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Salve Regina owns the all-time series 57-7 and has won the last thirteen dates between the two teams.
