Western New England Tops Women's Basketball

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to the Western New England Golden Bears by a 66-40 score in Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Tuesday evening, as sophomore Shaina Cooney (Montgomery, N.Y.) of the Golden Bears led all scorers with 16 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black & Gold started the night on a 7-0 run that featured a three-pointer from junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.). The Golden Bears responded with nine straight points of their own to take a 9-7 lead. The Leopards answered with a three-pointer from senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) and a layup from sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) to put the visitors ahead 12-9. The two teams traded baskets to work up to a 14-14 score until two buckets from WNE put the hosts ahead 18-14 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
  • The two teams traded baskets to start the second frame until a three-pointer from senior Abby Garaban (Maplewood, N.J.)  put WNE ahead 23-16. The Leopards scored four of the next five points to cut the deficit to 24-20. The Golden Bears ended the second quarter on an 8-0 that featured a three-pointer from freshman Paige Winter (Essex, Vt.), putting themselves ahead 32-20 at the half.
  • Sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) got the scoring started for the Leopards after a made free throw from the opposition, posting the score at 33-22. Another three-pointer from Garaban ignited a 13-3 run by the Golden Bears to extend the lead to 46-25. Sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) nailed a three-pointer and had two successful free throws sandwich a Golden Bears' basket to bring the score to 48-30. Winter drained a three-pointer as part of a 5-0 run WNE ended the quarter on, bringing the tally to 53-30.
  • Both teams had a difficult time draining the first shot of the final quarter. Just under three and a half minutes into the action, the Golden Bears sank the first bucket to bring the score to 55-30. Amoddio answered with a three-pointer to bring the score to 55-33. WNE went on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 61-33 until senior Francesca Farrell (Stoneham, Mass.) made two free throws to post the score at 61-35. The Leopards scored the next five points, with four coming from David, to bring the score 61-40. Junior Caeli Fitzpatrick (Duxbury, Mass.) made a three-pointer for the Golden Bears to bring the score to 64-40 while another two points shortly thereafter capped the final score at 66-40.

SERIES NOTES:

  • WNE owns the all-time series, 24-2, with their last loss occurring in 2014.

  • Wentworth travels back home on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a non-conference matchup against MCLA.
