Suffolk Hangs On Over Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – A double-double by Amanda DeAngelis (Londonderry, N.H.) gave the Suffolk Rams a narrow 55-50 win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday evening. DeAngelis' night ended with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth tipped off the scoring on a three-pointer by sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.), making the score 3-0 just under a minute into play. The two foes traded baskets to a 5-5 score until the Rams sprung out to an 11-5 lead, backed by four points from DeAngelis. Junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.) hit a three to cut the deficit to 11-8. Suffolk ended the quarter on a 10-4 run, bringing their lead to 21-12 after one.
  • DeAngelis and freshman Kendall Jacques (Billerica, Mass.) scored the first points for the Rams in the second quarter to rally the score up to 25-12. The Leopards answered with a 9-0 run that was ignited by four points from David and a three from sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.), bringing the score to 25-21. After another score from DeAngelis, sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) nailed a three-pointer to bring the score to 27-24. Amoddio made a layup shortly thereafter and the Rams secured a free throw tally to raise the score to 28-26 at the half.
  • The two teams traded baskets to begin the second half, working their way up to a 38-31 score, with the Rams holding their lead thanks to a three by sophomore Maddie Stewart (Conway, N.H.). Suffolk scored six-straight points, followed by five-straight from the Leopards, bringing the score to 44-36. DeAngelis sank a free throw and Amoddio notched another three afterwards to bring the score to 45-40 after three quarters of play.
  • Sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) kicked off the scoring in the final quarter and DeAngelis scored another basket of her own to bring the tally to 47-42. Carroll sank a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 47-45. The two teams traded baskets to work up to a 49-47 score and a free throw by David cut the lead to just one. Stewart's two successful free throws started a 4-0 run by the Rams, bringing the score to 53-48. Two more free throw makes for the Rams followed a layup by Foster, bringing the final score to 55-50.

SERIES NOTES:

  • The Rams hold the advantage in the all-time series, 27-9, with their last loss to the Leopards coming in 2007.
