Defense Prevails as Endicott Tops Women's Basketball

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team couldn't crack the Endicott Gulls' defensive play, resulting in a 77-52 loss at the hands of their Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Endicott began the game on a 10-2 run, with four points each coming from senior Tara Laugeni (Woodbridge, Conn.) and sophomore Sarah Dempsey (Windham, N.H.). Wentworth notched three points on free throw makes from junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.), cutting the deficit to 10-7. After Dempsey made another layup, sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) made a layup of her own to make the score 12-9. The two teams traded baskets to end the quarter, giving the Gulls a 16-13 advantage.
  • The second frame featured a lengthy run for the Gulls, a 20-2 mark, to make the score 36-15. The run was guided by eight different point-getters including junior Taylor Bogdanski (Saugus, Mass.), who scored four points on the run, and senior Cassie Caldwell (Marshfield, Mass.), who scored a three-pointer for her first basket of the game. Senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) notched a three-pointer at the buzzer to bring the score to 36-18 at the half.
  • Endicott started the second half with five-straight points, with four coming from Dempsey, to make the score 41-18. Sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) scored a layup to make the score 41-20. After an Endicott score, sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) scored three points to make the score 43-23. The two teams traded baskets that included a Carroll three-pointer to bring the score to 47-28.
  • Caldwell drained another three and scored another two to extend the Gulls' lead to 52-28. Wentworth rattled off the next five points, including a three-pointer from sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine), to raise the score to 52-33. Endicott answered with a three of their own from sophomore Katelyn Konareski (Milford, Conn.), making the score 55-33. The two teams traded baskets to work up to a 59-39 score until a three from David cut the deficit to 59-42 after three quarters of play.
  • Another three from Caldwell began a 10-3 run for the Gulls that featured two threes from Caldwell and one from Carroll for the Black & Gold to bring the score to 69-45. The Leopards answered with a 7-3 run that featured a three-pointer from Busbey to mark the score at 72-52. Freshman Rachel Barach (Carlisle, Mass.) scored a three following to make the score 75-52. The Gulls scored two free throws to end the game, marking a final score of 77-52.
  • Dempsey led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Caldwell with 14.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Endicott leads the all-time series, 34-4.
