Roger Williams Troubles Women's Basketball

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team couldn't control the ball well enough against the Hawks of Roger Williams, resulting in an 84-50 loss at the hands of their conference rival Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hawks managed to get out to a 4-0 lead with just under a minute and a half of play underway. However, a three-pointer from junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.) cut the deficit to one at 4-3. Roger Williams then went on a 9-2 run, with a three coming from freshman Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.), making the score 13-5. The Leopards cut the deficit to 13-8 with a three from senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska), but senior Nikki Rosa (Nahant, Mass.) scored a three of her own to make the score 16-8 shortly after. After another three points for Wentworth, the Hawks scored eight-straight, including four from senior Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.), to make the score 24-11. Busbey scored another four points just before the Hawks spit five points on the board, with three coming from Rosa, to hold a 29-15 after the first quarter.
  • The first nine points of the second quarter were scored by the Hawks, with a three-pointer coming from junior Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.), extending their lead to 38-15. Wentworth scored six of next ten points, with all six coming from sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine), to make the score 42-21. After three points from the Hawks, Foster drained a three to make the score 45-24. A back-and-forth scoring affair ended the quarter, with the Leopards receiving scores from Foster and sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.). The Hawks held a 51-32 lead at the half.
  • Araneo scored two of the Hawks' four-straight points to kick off the third quarter with a 55-32 lead. Wentworth then rattled off six-straight, off of three different point-getters, to make the score 55-38. The Hawks ended the third quarter on a 15-5 run. Helping the Leopards' scores was a three-pointer from sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.), while junior Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) scored eight of the Hawks' 15 points, giving them a 70-43 lead after three quarters.
  • A quiet fourth quarter began with a 10-3 run for the Hawks, who received four points each from freshman Giana Pye (Wallingford, Conn.) and senior Peri MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) on the run that extended their lead to 80-46. The Leopards responded with four-straight points, with two points each coming from Busbey and Amoddio, to make the score 80-50. The final four points scored were for the Hawks, giving them an 84-50 conference win.
  • Foster tied Araneo with a game-high 17 points. The Leopards shot 42.6% from the floor compared to the Hawks' 59.6%, while Roger Williams outrebounded Wentworth 38-17.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Roger Williams leads the all-time series, 52-10, suffering their last loss to the Leopards in 2010.
