Three from Women's Basketball Tally Double-Doubles Against Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. – Three student-athletes from the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team secured a double-double in the Leopards' 92-71 Commonwealth Coast Conference loss to Nichols Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nichols tipped off action with a 9-0 run that included three-pointers from seniors Kiera Fernandes (Franklin, Mass.) and Erin Cann (Billerica, Mass.) to start the game. After a layup by sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) got the Leopards on the board, the Bison rattled off another five points, with three from Fernandes, to take a 14-2 lead. After a layup by sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.), Nichols scored another five before senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) scored her first basket of the game to make the score 19-6. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first quarter, working up to a 28-12 score in favor of the hosts.
  • After a three-pointer by freshman Alyvia Smith (Fitchburg, Mass.) extended the Bison's lead to 31-12 at the start of the second frame, the Leopards popped off ten of the next 14 points in the game, with six coming from Carlson to mark a 35-22 score. After a Fernandes bucket, Carlson notched another layup to mark a 37-24 deficit for the Leopards at the half.
  • The hosts notched the first ten points of the third quarter, with five coming from Fernandes and four from junior Abrianna Vazquez (Dedham, Mass.), to extend their lead to 47-24. The Leopards tallied the next six points, with four coming from sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.), to cut the deficit to 47-30. After the Bison scored eight of the next ten points, the Leopards scored eight-straight points of their own, with threes from Busbey and sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) making the score 55-40. The two teams traded baskets to give the game a 62-45 score after the third quarter.
  • The two teams traded baskets for the first half of the final quarter of play, working up to a 76-56 score in favor of the hosts. However, the Leopards notched six-straight points following, with four from Foster, to close the gap at 76-62. Nichols rattled off the next seven points, with five from Vazquez, to extend their lead to 83-62. After the two teams traded baskets to an 87-66 score, Carroll drained another three before the Bison notched five of the next seven points to take a 92-71 game.
  • Foster (25 points, 16 rebounds), Carroll (18, 14), and Carlson (13, 10) all notched double-doubles for the Leopards. Carlson's 13 points marked a new career-high. Fernandes led all scorers with 30 points.
