Women's Basketball Falls to Roger Williams on Senior Day

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team battled the Hawks of Roger Williams on their senior day Saturday afternoon. However, the Leopards couldn't catch up to the Hawks in the late going, resulting in a 74-52 loss to their conference opponent.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Roger Williams started the game on an 11-4 run that spanned 3:31, getting a three-pointer from senior Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.) to help. The Leopards answered with a three from sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 11-7. The Hawks rattled off the next eight points until another Carroll three slowed their roll at a 19-10 score. Roger Williams outscored Wentworth 6-3 in the final going, while the hosts got a three from sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.), to mark a 25-13 score after the first frame.
  • Sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored the first basket of the second quarter for the Leopards just before Roger Williams answered, marking a 27-15 score. Carroll drained another three following that score and just before sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) added two points for the Leopards, marking a 27-20 score. Roger Williams ended the first half by outscoring the Leopards 13-6, as the team got seven points from Araneo to hold a 40-28 advantage.
  • Foster scored an initial two for the Leopards to start the third quarter before junior Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) answered with two of her own, marking a 42-30 score. After Amoddio sank a three, the two teams traded baskets until senior Nikki Rosa (Nahant, Mass.) and Carroll traded three-pointers to mark a 53-37 score. The two teams traded baskets to end the third quarter in a 60-42 advantage for the visitors.
  • Roger Williams started the final frame on a 14-1 run until a Foster three slowed them down at a 74-46 score. Senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) scored a basket to ignite six-straight points for the Leopards, giving the game a 74-52 final score.

 

SERIES NOTES:

  • The Hawks lead the all-time series, 53-10.
