Women's Basketball Falls to Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – 19 points by junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) matched the game-high despite the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team (1-1) dropping their second contest of the season, falling to the host Elms Blazers (1-1) 64-42 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams traded scores to open the first quarter, working the score to 9-6 in favor of the Leopards, until a three-pointer by senior Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, Conn.) knotted the score. Two free throw makes by junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) gave Wentworth an 11-9 edge before the Blazers scored four straight to hold a 13-11 lead after quarter one.
  • After the Leopards tied the score at 13-all to begin the second quarter, Elms scored seven straight to take a 20-13 advantage, including a three-pointer by senior Sadie Hunt (Sandwich, Mass.). Two Foster layups kept the Leopards in close with the Blazers, marking a 25-17 score, before two points by freshman Reagan Madonia (Corrales, N.M.) cut the Leopards deficit to six heading into the break.
  • Foster and Johnston traded multiple baskets to open up the second half, raising the score to 31-23 in favor of the Blazers. After a two-point make by junior Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) cut the deficit to 34-27, two free throw makes by Foster dwindled the deficit by two before another three from Johnston marked a 37-29 score. Three pointers by Johnston and freshman Jade Lewis (Orlando, Fla.) juiced a 12-2 run for the Blazers, giving the hosts a 49-31 lead after three quarters of action.
  • Freshman Samantha Jones (Beverly, Mass.) notched the first basket of the fourth quarter, marking a 49-33 score, before five points by Elms were answered with a make by Foster, bringing the score to 56-35. After four straight for the Blazers brought the score to 60-35, two free throw makes by Foster and a three by Carroll cut the deficit to 60-40. Traded baskets in the final going marked a 64-42 win for the hosts.
