Fast Start Lifts Curry Past Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Lauren Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) netted a game-high 19 points as the Curry College women's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 56-40, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday night.

With the win the Colonels improve to 6-11 overall and 1-8 in league play while the Leopards stand at 3-11 (0-9).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the score tied at 2-all, Curry used a 16-1 run to take an 18-3 lead with 30 seconds after Dunn converted a three-point play. Junior Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) ended the run with a basket 13 seconds later to make it 18-5 after the first quarter.
  • Dunn opened the second quarter with a three that was matched by junior Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) just over a minute later. Both teams struggled to score over the next three minutes before Dunn made a layup. The Colonels extended their lead to 25-8 with 3:08 left in the half before another Carroll three made it 25-11 and her shot from behind the arc with six seconds left made it a 27-14 game at the break as both teams scored nine points in the frame.
  • Curry opened the game up to 34-16 with 7:35 left in the third, after a layup from Dunn. However, a layup from sophomore Regan Madonia (Corrales, N.M.) and a three from Carlson made it 34-21 with 6:16 left. The Colonels extended their lead to 18 with 45 seconds left on a three from junior Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.).
  • After McCarthy opened the fourth quarter with a layup to extend the lead to 20, the Leopards got a pair of free throws from freshman Aissata Conde (Brockton, Mass.) and two from the charity stripe from Madonia to trim the lead to 16. The Black & Gold held Curry without a field goal for a span of 6:03 before the visitors took their largest lead of the game with 3:48 left.
  • Carroll led Wentworth with 15 points – all coming from behind the arc. Madonia added eight, while Amoddio chipped in with seven. The Leopards had a 39-38 rebounding advantage and outscored Curry, 13-11, in the fourth quarter.
