Women's Basketball Drops Road Game to UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Faye Veilleux (Wrentham, Mass.) tallied 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds as the University of New England women's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 67-39, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UNE jumped out to a 6-0 lead before a layup from junior Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) got Wentworth on the board. Veilleux made a layup, however, a pair of free throws from sophomore Tita Rana (Boston, Mass.) brought the lead back to four. The Nor'Easters went on a 10-2 run to take an 18-8 lead before a jumper from freshman Samanatha Jones (Beverly, Mass.) and a layup from sophomore Reagan Madonia (Corales, N.M.), as well as a pair of free throws from Amoddio made it a seven-point game at the end of the opening frame.
  • Eight straight points to open the second quarter put UNE ahead, 29-14 before Rana ended the run with a jumper. The Nor'Easters built their lead to 21 (37-16) with 5:32 left in the half and led, 41-22, at the break.
  • A three from Amoddio and a jumper from Rana sandwiched around a basket by Veilleux , making it 43-27, with 8:35 left in the third quarter. After UNE upped its lead to as many as 22, the Black & Gold whittled the lead to 18 on three occasions and trained, 60-39, at the end of the quarter.
  • The Leopards held the hosts to seven points in the final 10 minutes.
  • Amoddio led Wentworth with 17 points, while Rana added a career-high eight and grabbed five rebounds.
