WNE Pulls Away from Women’s Basketball
Leopards fall to Golden Bears, 73-37; Brianna Carroll leads with 9 points on 3 three-pointers

BOSTON, Mass. – Two double-digit point-getters ahead of 11 other student-athletes who registered at least one point helped the Western New England Golden Bears women's basketball team to a 73-37 conference win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears stay unblemished with the win, holding a 9-0 overall mark (3-0 CNE). The Black & Gold fall to 2-5 (0-2 CNE).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Wentworth scored the game's opening two points, four-straight by the Golden Bears marked a 4-2 lead before a three from Samantha Jones gave the Leopards a 5-4 edge. Another two from Reagon Madonia pushed Wentworth's lead to 7-4 before WNE went on a 13-2 run, featuring two threes from Sophie Hedge, to take a 17-9 lead. A three by Brianna Carroll cut the deficit to 17-12 before the Golden Bears finished the frame with a 10-0 run.
- WNE opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run before another two from Jones stopped the score at 33-14. From there, the two teams swapped scores, with a Carroll three marking a 37-19 deficit. After four free throw makes for the Golden Bears, another Carroll three marked a 41-22 score before two free throw makes for the Leopards marked a 41-24 score at the break.
- The Golden Bears scored 18-straight to start the third quarter, including eight from Lilly Hedge, to take a 59-24 lead before a three by Madonia marked a 59-27 score. WNE dropped four more points to hold a 63-27 lead after three quarters of play.
- Both teams swapped scores for much of the fourth quarter, evening out a 10-10 split, for the Golden Bears to hold on 73-37. Lilly Hedge led all scorers with 14 points, followed by Sophie Hedge with 11. Carroll (9 points, 3-for-6 beyond the arc) and Taylor Garabedian (8) led the Leopards.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the 30th all-time meeting between the two teams.
