PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Grace Jaffray of the Johnson & Wales Wildcats women's basketball team (8-1) drained a game-high 32 points against the Wentworth Institute of Technology (2-7), with the Wildcats running away with an 86-57 non-conference win Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Brianne Foley scored the game's opening basket for the Wildcats, starting a 4-0 run for the hosts. Gabby Amoddio drained two to cut the deficit to 4-2 before Johnson & Wales sank three-straight three-pointers, two coming from Maiyah Johnson, to take a 13-2 lead. Maddy Foster and Maddie Gaynor scored two points apiece to cut Wentworth's deficit to 13-6 after one quarter of action.
- After the Wildcats extended their lead by two early in the second frame, Reagan Madonia drained a three to cut the Leopards' deficit at 15-9. Foley dropped three straight for the Wildcats in response before the Leopards had a 4-0 run of their own to raise the score to 18-13.
- Isabella Suero hit two threes as part of an 8-0 run for Johnson & Wales, pushing their lead to 26-13, before a three from Brianna Carroll marked a 26-16 game. Another Suero three kickstarted a 23-6 run, featuring six points apiece from Mikayla Caruso and Grace Jaffray, to hold a 49-22 lead at the break.
- After the Leopards cut their deficit by two to open the third quarter, Suero dropped a three to help push the Wildcats' lead to 53-24. Amoddio dropped a three of her own before a Foster layup later helped push the score to 55-33. Jaffray scored 11-straight points to extend the Wildcats' advantage to 66-33 before the Black & Gold ended the frame on a 10-5 run, featuring four points from Gaynor and Foster, to mark a 71-43 score.
- Buckets from Foster and Amoddio cut the Leopards' deficit to 71-47 early in the fourth quarter before, after traded scores, two from Samantha Jones helped mark a 76-55 game. The Wildcats finished the day with a 10-2 run to take an 86-57 final.
- Jaffray led all scorers with her 32 points, followed by Suero with 19. Foster led the Leopards off of the bench with 16 points (7-14 FG) followed by Amoddio who had nine points and tied the team-high with her eight rebounds.
