BOSTON, Mass. – Double-doubles from Maddy Foster and Taylor Garabedian of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball weren't enough to outscore the Nichols Bison as the Leopards' conference rival held on for an 81-68 Conference of New England victory Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Bison improve to 10-4 and 3-4 in conference play. Wentworth drops to 2-12 and 0-7 in CNE action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After an initial two from Adriana Romano gave the Bison a 2-0 lead, Maddy Foster drained two of her own to knot the score. After another Romano score, Wentworth would rattle off five straight to take a 7-4 lead. The two teams dueled for points, with a Taylor Garabedian helping mark an 11-8 lead.
- From there, the two teams swapped scores, with a layup by Foster marking a 13-10 game before two threes from Rylee Barrieault helped give Nichols a 17-13 advantage. The two teams traded points to end the opening frame with a 22-17 score in favor of the Bison.
- After the two teams traded layups to begin the second quarter, Romano and Abrianna Vazquez layups jolted a 17-4 run for the Bison, stretching their lead to 39-21 on a trifecta. Four straight points from Garabedian cut the deficit at 39-25 before the Bison again clinched another run, this time at 9-5, to hold a 48-30 lead. A Garabedian layup marked a 48-32 score at the halfway mark.
- Nichols opened the third frame with a 9-2 run, featuring four points from Vazquez, to extend their lead to 57-34 before a three by Foster and a later layup by Garabedian marked a 59-39 score.
- Wentworth then went on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 61-44 before Nichols rattled off seven of the next nine points, holding a 68-46 lead. A three-point play by Brooke Carlson was answered with a free throw make by the Bison, marking a 69-49 game.
- Three straight points for the Leopards to start out the fourth quarter was answered with a pair of layups by Summer Klein that sandwiched another Leopard make, marking a 73-54 score. Wentworth scored five-straight to close the gap at 73-59, but the Bison would outlast the Black & Gold in a back-and-forth finish, 81-68.
- Foster (23 points, 18 rebounds) and Garabedian (21, 10) led all scorers with their 20-point outings while notching respective double-doubles. Garabedian also neared a triple-double, totaling seven assists as well. The Bison were led by identical 18-point nights from Romano and Vazquez. Despite the loss, Wentworth owned a 50-36 rebounding advantage.
