Women's Basketball Battles Gordon on Senior Day
Leopards fall short to Scots, 73-65, in season finale; Gabby Amoddio drops game-high 20 points
BOSTON, Mass. – A game-high 20 points from Gabby Amoddio led a tight battle for the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team, who fell short to the Gordon Fighting Scots by a 73-65 score in Conference of New England action Saturday afternoon.
The Scots cap their season with a 9-16 overall record and a 6-12 mark in CNE play. The Leopards wrap their campaign with a 2-23 overall record (0-18 CNE).
Prior to tip-off, the Leopards honored Amoddio and fellow seniors Brianna Carroll, Brooke Carlson, and Maddy Foster as part of Senior Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Traded three-pointers in the early-going, including one each from Foster and Carroll, gave the Leopards a 6-3 lead before another Carroll three extended the lead to 9-5 later on. A Naomi Nicholson three cut the Scots' deficit to 9-8 before an Ami Rivera trifecta gave themselves an 11-9 edge. The two teams swapped scores, with another Rivera three giving Gordon a 16-13 advantage.
- Five straight points from Carlson gave Wentworth an 18-16 lead before an Amoddio make extended the lead to 20-16. Gordon drained two to mark a 20-18 deficit after one frame. Five straight for Wentworth to open the second quarter extended the advantage to 25-18 on a Carroll three before the two teams traded buckets to a 27-21 game.
- Two layups by Woynitu Ciccarello helped the Scots knot the score at 27-all before two threes by Amoddio sandwiched a Rivera three and gave the Leopards a 33-30 lead. Gordon slimmed the deficit to one at 33-32 before the break.
- Gordon opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run, grabbing hold of a 41-35 lead, before the two teams swapped scores to a 45-41 score, with a Taylor Garabedian layup closing the gap for the Leopards. Ciccarello hit a three to mark a 48-41 game before the two teams swapped points the rest of the frame, with the Scots holding a 7-4 edge as they extended their advantage to 55-45.
- A Ciccarello three was answered with a Foster layup, marking a 58-47 score in the fourth frame, before the two teams swapped scores to a 61-51 game. Ciccarello added four straight to extend their lead to 65-51 before the two teams again traded scores, this time to a 71-57 game, before two Amoddio threes cut the deficit to 71-63 by the 1:05 mark. The two teams swapped free throw makes, marking a 73-65 final.
- Amoddio led all scorers with 20 points (7-11 FG, 4-7 3PT FG) while adding five boards. Ciccarello paced three fellow Scots in double figures with a team-high 19 points. The Leopards, who outrebounded the Scots 37-36, dropped nine trifectas, just three shy of a program record for a single game.
