Fast Start Paces Nichols over Women’s Lacrosse in CNE Opener
Bison use fast start to race past Leopards, 17-8; Grace Del Pilar stuffs the stat sheet, accounting for game-high seven draw controls, four points, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers

DUDLEY, Mass. – Six goals by Hadley Hougton, including three in the opening frame, paced the Nichols Bison women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 Conference of New England win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon.
The Bison stay undefeated at 7-0 overall and open conference play 1-0. The Leopards dip to .500 at 4-4 and are now 0-1 in CNE action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bison opened the contest with a goal just 1:29 into the first frame and rattled off four more goals, including two from Houghton, to take a 5-0 advantage by the 6:23 mark. Wentworth answered as Sydney Vega struck at the 1:48 mark to cut the deficit to 5-1 before Houghton added another score with 23 ticks left to mark a 6-1 game.
- Nichols extended their lead to 7-1 with a free position shot at the 11:05 mark of the second quarter before a tally by Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie marked a 7-2 contest just 1:09 later. The Bison ended the frame with a 3-1 run, with Vega getting on the board once more at the 3:58 mark, to hold a 10-3 lead at the break.
- After the Bison capitalized with the man-advantage early in the third, Grace Sweet cut Wentworth's deficit to 11-4 by the 13:43 mark. Another two scores for the Bison in a span of 38 seconds extended their advantage to 13-4 before the Leopards closed the frame scoring two of three total goals, with tallies coming from Del Pilar (9:59) and Anna Faberlle (0:33) to mark a 14-6 score.
- Gunning-Lavoie and Sweet struck once more at the 8:47 and 7:46 marks of the fourth frame, respectively, to cut Wentworth's deficit to 14-8. However, the Bison finished the afternoon with another three unanswered to pad their lead at 17-8 with 59 ticks left.
- Del Pilar stuffed the stat sheet for the Black & Gold, accounting for a goal, three assists, four caused turnovers, four ground balls, and a game-high seven draw controls. In goal, Hayden Saunders made 12 saves and scooped up four ground balls.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the 12th all-time meeting between the two teams.
