Women’s Lacrosse Edges Curry in Senior Day Thriller
Leopards rally to grab 12-9 lead, hold on for 12-11 win over Colonels; Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie leads with six points
BOSTON, Mass. – Behind 7-6 at the half, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team used a second half surge in a back-and-forth affair to edge out the Curry Colonels by a 12-11 score in Conference of New England play Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Black & Gold improve to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in CNE play. The Colonels fall to 3-9 overall (0-4 CNE).
As part of Senior Day, the Leopards honored seniors Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie, Hayden Saunders, Lily Cohen, Kaitlyn Kozak, and Felicity Gonzalez prior to the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Grace Sweet put Wentworth ahead by one just 1:19 into the afternoon, the Colonels responded with two of their own to take a 2-1 edge by the 8:26 mark. Gunning-Lavoie knotted the score for the Leopards at the 7:17 mark before Grayson Goolgasian gave Curry a 3-2 edge with just 10 ticks on the clock.
- The Black & Gold rallied and took a 5-3 lead just over six minutes into the second quarter on tallies by Anna Faberlle (14:09), Grace Del Pilar (9:45), and Kozak (8:38). The Colonels answered with three straight of their own, taking a 6-5 edge with 2:26 on the clock, before Gunning-Lavoie knotted the score once more at the 1:47 mark. Curry found the back of the net just 14 seconds later to give themselves a 7-6 edge at the half.
- Goolgasian pushed Curry's lead to 8-6 just 1:19 into the third frame before Wentworth rattled off three straight goals to take a 9-8 edge by the 3:05 mark of the third. Early in the fourth, Gunning-Lavoie and Tessa Wilkie rippled twine to extend the Leopards' advantage to 11-8 by the 11:46 mark.
- Natalie Keenan struck for the Colonels to cut their deficit to 11-9 at the 7:59 mark. Wentworth answered with a goal of their own just 52 seconds later, pushing the lead to 12-9. Keenan found twine twice for the Colonels in the wanning moments of the fourth (2:17, :43), but the Leopards held on for a 12-11 win.
- Gunning-Lavoie paced the offense with six points (four goals, two assists), followed by Sweet with four of her own (two goals, two assists). Wilkie registered a game-high eight draw controls. Del Pilar and Ellie White recorded three caused turnovers apiece, with the latter scooping five ground balls. Between the pipes, Cohen made five saves in the start while Saunders stopped eight of her own and collected four ground balls to preserve the win.
NOTEWORTHY:
- The Leopards' CNE win this afternoon marks their first conference triumph since 2022.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the 12th all-time meeting between the two teams.
