Wentworth Drops Matchup With Western New England in Season Finale

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team fell to Western New England University Tuesday afternoon in the Leopards' final match of the 2021 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Western New England had chances in the opening minutes of the match, first earning a pair of corner opportunities followed by a shot on goal that was stopped by Wentworth goalkeeper Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.)
  • Following another missed shot opportunity, the Golden Bears got on the board in the 23rd minute, when Samantha Vitka received a pass from Isabella Montalvo and slid it to the right of Heaton, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • The Leopards picked up a shot opportunity of their own minutes later in an attempt to even the score, but WNE goalkeeper Molly McLaughlin made a save to hold the lead.
  • Western New England had multiple opportunities to extend the lead late in the first half, but Heaton made three saves to keep the deficit at one heading into the intermission.
  • Following another pair of corner chances for the Golden Bears, the visitors extended their lead to two. Vitka picked up her second goal on the day, putting a header shot past Heaton off a corner from Autumn Hathaway to give WNE a two goal lead in the 66th minute.
  • After Wentworth was unable to connect on a shot opportunity, Western New England found the back of the net once again. WNE's Summer Hathaway sent the ball towards the front of the net, and Allison Bruehwiler was there to tap it in to give the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead in the 73rd minute that would prove to be the final goal scored on the day.

 

THE SERIES:

  • This was the 16th time the two programs have met. Western New England now leads the all-time series 8-7-1.
