BOSTON, Mass. – Two goals by Raffaella Brunetti, including the game-winner in the 78th minute, proved to be the difference for the Roger Williams Hawks women's soccer team (8-4-5, 2-2-3 CNE) as the Hawks edged the Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-8-4, 1-5-1 CNE) by a 2-1 score Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Roger Williams got on the board just 1:55 into the afternoon as a give-and-go pass from Casey Donnelly found the foot of Brunetti, who potted the rock just under the uprights from a far range to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge early.
- Wentworth brought the ball back downfield by the 17th minute, resulting in a corner kick by the 16:57 mark. The Leopards capitalized on their chances as a tic-tac-toe play that began with Jordan Dahan and Bryce Bateman finished with Jenny Montville, with her shot finding the back of the net at the 24:04 mark.
- The Leopards nearly took a 2-1 lead at the 59:32 mark as a shot by Emily Hagen was saved with a dive and tipped out of bounds. A Dahan try in the 63rd minute also proved to be unsuccessful.
- After Roger Williams was rewarded a corner at the 71:06 mark, the Hawks kept the ball down field, finishing a passing play with a Brunetti shot inside the box that found the back of the goal at the 77:22 mark, raising the score to 2-1.
- A last-chance shot by Hagen in the 89th minute went high as the Hawks held on for the tight win. In goal, Shyla Kulesza made six saves for the Black & Gold, while the Hawks held tight edges in shots (18-11) and corner kicks (6-4).
