Women’s Soccer Tops Suffolk in Thrilling Season Finale
Jenny Montville scores in the 89th minute to lift the Leopards over the Rams in the season finale, 2-1
BOSTON, Mass. – Despite a then-game-tying goal just over two minutes earlier, a late tally by Jenny Montville in the 89th minute gave the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team an impressive 2-1 win over the visiting Suffolk Rams in both team's regular season finales Tuesday night.
The Leopards cap their season with a 5-9-4 overall mark (2-6-1 CNE), a three-win improvement from a season ago, while the Rams finish the campaign with a mark of 7-4-6 (1-4-4 CNE).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams traded opportunities to open the contest, with both goalkeepers picking up clutch saves in the early going just before Wentworth broke through at the 15:07 mark as a ball off of a free kick ricocheted off of two Rams out front to the foot of Rachel Hagerty, who batted in the game-breaking score.
- Being awarded a corner kick in the 31st minute, the Leopards managed a shot on goal off a give-and-go from the corner, with the try being denied by a Ram on the end line. The Black & Gold nearly added to the score again in the 40th minute as an initial try by Bryce Bateman was denied just before an offsides call waved off another potential attempt.
- The two teams spent much of the second half of play juking things out until the Rams managed to get on the board with just 4:05 left to play, as a pass from Jazmya Harris from below the goal mount found the foot of Kylie Flynn, who knotted the score at one aside.
- Just after Suffolk's goal, Wentworth ran possession down the field, with a far shot from Kyra Forsberg nicking the crossbar. The rebound try landed down below to Montville, who rippled the twine to give the Leopards a 2-1 lead with just 1:53 remaining.
- Shyla Kulesza made six saves in goal for the Leopards while the team owned advantages in shots (18-14) and corner kicks (4-1).
