Leopards Swept by Roger Williams

BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams women's tennis team won its third straight The Commonwealth Coast Conference match as the Hawks shut out Wentworth, 9-0, in a TCCC match played at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club.

 

Roger Williams wasted little time jumping out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the Leopards in doubles play by identical 8-0 scores.  Junior Amanda Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) to defeat Wentworth senior Meredith Gratton (West Chazy, N.Y.) and freshman Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) at number two, while freshman Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.) teamed with senior Leah Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, Conn.) at number one doubles and defeated sophomore Natalya Cappellini (Falmouth, Mass.) and junior Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, Mass.).  Junior Kristin Dono (West Boylston, Mass.) and junior Libby Magner (Lakefield, Mass.) completed the sweep with a win at number three over freshman Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and sophomore Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.).

 

The Hawks took a 4-0 lead when freshman Alexandra Reilly (North Easton, Mass.) was awarded a win at number six singles after an injury to Hegner and clinched the match when Klein defeated Cappellini, 6-0, 6-1, at number two singles.  Curran defeated Gustafson, 6-0, 6-0, at number one singles, while Ribchinsky defeated Gratton, 6-1, 6-0, at number three singles to extend the lead to 7-0.  Wolfe swept freshman Alexis Cristaldi (Methuen, Mass.), 6-3, 6-0, at number four singles before a 6-3, 6-0 win by sophomore Olivia Hilton (Vernon, Conn.) rounded out the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at number five singles over Flynn.

 

With the win Roger Williams improves to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in TCCC play.  The Hawks are at Wesleyan tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.  Wentworth falls to 1-8 (1-6) and is at Colby-Sawyer Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
