Leopards Sweep Pride, 9-0, For Second Straight Win

WESTON, Mass. – Wentworth's women's tennis team closed The Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a convincing, 9-0 sweep at Regis to win its second straight match for the first time this season.

 

The Leopards began the match with a 2-0 lead as the number three doubles and number six singles matches were defaulted by the Pride.  Junior Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, Mass.) teamed with senior Meredith Gratton (West Chazy, N.Y.) to earn an 8-3 win at number one doubles, while sophomore Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) won at number two doubles by the same score.

 

Gustasfon, Gratton, and Massaro each won their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, at numbers one, three and four to make it a 7-0 score, before Flynn took a 6-4, 7-5 decision at number five singles.  Sophomore Natalya Cappellini (Falmouth, Mass.) completed Wentworth's second straight sweep with a 7-5, 7-5 win at number two singles.

 

With the win Wentworth improves to 3-10 overall and concludes conference play at 3-8.  The Leopards just missed qualifying for TCCC Tournament but will close out the season with a pair of non-league matches, beginning with a Thursday home match against Emmanuel at 3:30 p.m.  Regis dropped its eighth straight to stand at 1-11 (1-10).  The Pride close out their season Wednesday against Mount Ida.
