Salve Regina Sweeps Women's Tennis

BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Salve Regina women's tennis team swept the three doubles flights and never looked back, posting its third straight victory with a 9-0 win over Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club.

Sophomores Ana Gwozdz (Taunton, Mass.) and Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) got things started with an 8-1 win over sophomore Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and freshman Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) at number three doubles. Senior Nichol Stevens (Chester, Conn.) and junior Shannon O'Brien (Gorham, Maine) collected an 8-3 win over sophomore Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and junior Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.) at number three, before freshman Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman Megan Olson (Colchester, Vt.) completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at number one.

Sophomore Annie Mallin (Fairfield, Conn.) and classmate Erica Shay (Ashburnham, Mass.) posted identical 6-1, 6-0 wins at number six and number five singles, respectively, beating Ofer and Boyce, to clinch the match for the Seahawks.

Stevens defeated Gustafson, 6-0, 6-0, at number one, while DiFilippo topped Hegner, 6-1, 6-1, at number two to give the visitors a 7-0 lead before Gwozdz beat Massaro, 6-1, 6-4, at number three and O'Brien defeated Flynn, 6-4, 6-1.

With the win Salve Regina improves to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in CCC play. The Seahawks are at Eastern Nazarene on Thursday. The Leopards fall to 3-4 (2-4) and are at defending conference champion Nichols on Friday.
