BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team opened the 2012 season with a 9-0 sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference match, played at the Winsor School Courts on Saturday afternoon. The match marked the season opener for both Colleges of the Fenway programs. The host Saints made quick work of the visiting Leopards by sweeping the three doubles matches, before winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Second doubles finished first, as Emmanuel's senior captain Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) paired up with junior Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) for an 8-2 win over junior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and senior Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.). Emmanuel's third doubles team, featuring sophomores Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Me.) and Alex Jennings (Granby, Conn.), earned an 8-3 win over Wentworth freshmen Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Laura Boyd (Woodstock, Vt.). Sophomore Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) and junior captain Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) then downed Wentworth sophomores Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.), 8-4, on the first court, to give the Saints a 3-0 match lead heading into singles play.
In singles action, Woznicki defeated Massaro, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot. Reid downed Ofer, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. Konecnick beat junior Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.), 6-3, 6-0, at 4th singles. Hewes topped sophomore Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.), 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5. Emmanuel freshman Daniela Tueme (South Easton, Mass.) kicked off her collegiate tennis career by cruising to a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 win over McColgan at No. 6.
With five courts cleared and Emmanuel holding an 8-0 lead, both teams finished out the day by watching the end of the No. 1 singles battle between Hadlock and Corcoran. Hadlock captured a 7-5 win in the first set and then handily won the second set, 6-1, giving the Saints their 9th point of the match.
Emmanuel will return to the courts on Tuesday evening, September 4th, to host Rhode Island College in a 6:30 p.m. start. Wentworth will travel to Harvard University for a 4:00 p.m. match with Lesley University on September 6th.
