Nichols Hands Women's Tennis First League Loss

BOSTON, Mass. – The Nichols College women's tennis team swept all three doubles flights and took all six singles flights – including five in straight sets – as the Bison remained undefeated in Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 9-0 win over Wentworth in a CCC match played at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center.

Senior Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) and junior Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) got things going for the Bison with an 8-2 win at number three doubles over freshman Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.). Senior Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and freshman Michelle Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) took an 8-3 win over junior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and senior Sophie Boyce (South Portland, Maine) at number two before sophomore Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) teamed with senior Alex Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) to complete the sweep with an 8-2 win at number one over sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and sophomore Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.).

McQuiggan defeated Ofer, 6-0, 6-1 at number three before Cifone's 6-1, 6-1 win over Massaro at number two clinched the match for Nichols.

Woodruff defeated sophomore Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.), 6-1, 6-1 at number three, junior Nicole Marziarz (Southington, Conn.) took a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Boyce at number five, and Benoit defeated Corcoran at number one, 6-3, 6-0. Rivers needed three sets to defeat McColgan at number six, 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).

With the win the Bison improve to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in CCC play. Nichols hosts Curry tomorrow afternoon. Wentworth, which suffered its first conference loss of the season, fell to 3-5 (2-1) and is at Salve Regina on Saturday.
