Women's Tennis Falls in Season Opener
Leopards Swept by Rhode Island College, 9-0; number three doubles edged 8-6 and number two singles goes three sets
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback at Rhode Island College in the season-opening match for both squads.
In doubles play, Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, Conn.) teamed with freshman Kim Daigle (Sterling, Mass.) to defeat juniors Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.), 8-1 at number one and junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) teamed with sophomore Julie Reddy (Greenville, R.I.) to claim an 8-0 win over freshmen Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.) and Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) at number two. The Anchorwomen completed the sweep of doubles play with an 8-6 win at number three as sophomore Nicole Tiberi (Smithfield, R.I.) and Isabella Romero (Greenville, R.I.) defeated juniors Nicole Mooney (Waterfrd, Conn.) and Laura Boyd (Woodstock, Vt.).
Singles play saw Campanella defeat McColgan, 6-1, 6-1, at number one, Brown defeat Briggs, 6-4, 6-2, at number three, Reddy defeat Jodoin, 6-3, 6-0, at number four, junior Tressa Canata (Cranston, R.I.) defeat Boyd, 6-2, 6-3, at number five, and freshman Laura Natasi (Smithville, N.J.) defeat Mooney, 6-3, 6-4. At number two, Corcoran defeated Daigle, 6-4, in the opening set, however Daigle would recover to take the next two sets by identical 6-2 scores.
Both teams are in action on Tuesday. The Anchorwomen host Clark, while Wentworth is at Worcester State.
