Salve Regina Sweeps Women's Tennis
Leopards fall to Seahawks, 9-0, in CCC opener; Nicole McColgan's match at No. 2 goes three sets
BOSTON, Mass. – The Salve Regina University women's tennis team won its second straight match with a 9-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center.
With the win the Seahawks improve to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 1-2 (0-1).
At No. 2 doubles, junior Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, Conn.) teamed with freshman Caroline Rodman (Southington, Conn.) to take an 8-3 victory over senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). At No. 3, senior Julia Grant (Warwick, R.I.) and freshman Abbey Packard (Dudley, Mass.) teamed to defeat senior Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) and freshman Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) by an 8-3 score before senior Kasey Walther (Natick, Mass.) and junior Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 1 over sophomores Sam Webb (Westminster, Md.) and Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.).
In singles play, Walther defeated Briggs at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1 before Rodman's 6-1, 6-0 win over Jodoin at No. 3 clinched the match for Salve Regina.
Packard defeated freshman Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) (6-2, 6-0) at No. 5, Grant defeated Webb (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6, Gurber defeated McColgan (6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6)) at No. 2, and sophomore Corey Bailey (North Dartmouth, Mass.) defeated Mooney (6-3, 7-5) at No. 4.
Wentworth hosts Eastern Nazarene on Saturday while Salve Regina is at Endicott on Thursday.
