Women's Tennis Suffers Setback Against Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – The Suffolk University women's tennis team won its third straight match after defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology, 7-2, in a non-conference match played at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center.

With the win the Rams improve to 5-2 on the season while the Leopards fall to 2-7.

Senior Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) teamed with freshman Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) to win at No. 3 doubles while sophomore Sam Webb (Westminster, Md.) picked up Wentworth's other point at No. 6 singles.

Suffolk took a 1-0 lead with a win at No. 2 doubles as sophomore Valentina Media (San Andres, Colombia) teamed with senior Abby Trigilio (Ipswich, Mass.) to an 8-2 win over Leopard senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.). Wentworth tied the match with Mooney and DeGouveia's 8-6 win over freshman Meagan French (Newton, N.H.) and freshman Elena Cisneros (Brookline, Mass.). The Rams took a 2-1 lead after doubles play when junior Aidiana Sagyndykova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and senior Rebecca Eshoo (Farmington, Conn.) to an 8-5 win at No. 1 over sophomore Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.).

All six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Sagyndykova defeated Briggs at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, and Trigilio defeated Butts, 6-0, 6-1, at No.4 to give the visitors a 4-1 lead. Media's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 over senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) clinched the match for the Rams, who also saw Eshoo defeat Jodoin, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 and sophomore Isabel Rathlev (Wellesley, Mass.) defeat DeGouveia at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1. Webb's No. 6 singles match was a battle until the end with Webb prevailing, 6-4, 7-5.

Wentworth is at Curry on Saturday.
