Women's Tennis Falls in Conference Opener

WESTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team dropped its conference opener as the Leopards fell to five-time defending Commonwealth Coast Conference Champion Endicott, 9-0.

With the win the Gulls improve to 1-1 while the Leopards drop to 0-2.

In doubles play, senior Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass.) and sophomore Alexandra Barmore (Southington, Conn.) defeated freshman Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.), 8-1, at No. 2. At No. 1, sophomores Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) and Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine) defeated juniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.). Endicott completed the sweep of doubles play at No. 3 as sophomores Alexi Losano (Saugus, Mass.) and Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) defeated sophomores Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.), 8-4.

The Gulls didn't drop a set in singles play. Sophomore Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) defeated Jodoin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 before junior Maxine Bergstein's (Hingham, Mass.) 6-1, 6-0 win over freshman Emma Jurkiewicz (Andover, Mass.) at No. 5 clinched the match.

Senior Mackenzie Rhodes (Marlborough, Mass.) defeated Monteiro, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6, Barnett bested Briggs at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, sophomore Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn.) defeated DeLuca at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3, and Freter earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Webb at No. 4.

Wentworth is at Western New England on Tuesday.
