Women's Tennis Drops Match to Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team remained undefeated in Commonwealth Coast Conference play as the Hawks defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 9-0, in CCC play Saturday afternoon.

Roger Williams improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league play while the Leopards fall to 1-6 (1-4).

Freshman Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) took an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over freshman Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). At No. 1, juniors Julia Ackerman (Greenwich, Conn.) and Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) took an 8-3 decision from juniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.). Freshman Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and senior Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) won, 8-2, at No. 3 over sophomores Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.)

Singles play saw junior Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) defeat Webb at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, before freshman Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over sophomore Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.). Akerman defeated Jodoin at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, Hughes bested DeLuca, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, Briggs fell to senior Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.), 3-6, 1-6, and Riley won at No. 5 over Butts.

Wentworth hosts Nichols on Tuesday.
