Women's Tennis Falls in League Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. – In its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team was defeated by Roger Williams, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks dropped just one game in the three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. At No. 2, juniors Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) teamed up to defeat junior Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and sophomore Beverly LaChapelle (Caracas, Venezuela), 8-0. No. 3 doubles saw freshmen Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) and Tanya Gianitsos (Old Saybrook, Conn.) team up to defeat sophomores CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.). Junior Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and sophomore Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) were 8-1 winners over senior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and sophomore Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.).

Gianitsos was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Deakin at No. 5 singles before Bennett's 6-0, 6-0 win over Erickson at No. 6 clinched the match for Roger Williams. Magliato picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over LaChapelle at No. 3, Spillane was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over DeLuca at No. 3, and Roche defeated Butts, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. At No. 1, Sollecito defeated Martin in the first set, 6-1, however was defeated, 7-5, in the second set and 10-3 in the tiebreaking set.

Wentworth (0-4, 0-1) is at Endicott on Sunday afternoon.
