Women's Tennis Picks up First Win

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Sophomore Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) each picked up a pair of points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team notched its first victory of the season with a 6-2 triumph over Curry.

With the win the Leopards snap a 12-match losing streak dating back to October 6, 2017 and improve to 1-9 overall and 1-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the Colonels remain winless (0-10, 0-6).

Wentworth jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At No. 2, DeLuca teamed with sophomore Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.) for an 8-2 win over sophomore Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) and sophomore Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.). No. 1 saw Sollecito team with senior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) for an 8-3 win over sophomore Sidara Cash-Sortwell (South Portland, Maine) and freshman Hannah Faghan (Whitman, Mass.). Curry got on the board with a 9-7 win at No. 3 as freshman Skylar Lewis (Tiverton, R.I.) and freshman Rachel Lawlor (Meriden, Conn. Defeated sophomore CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and sophomore Beverly LaChapelle (Caracas, Venezuela).

Sollecito gave the Black & Gold a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Cash-Sortwell at No. 1. Faghan brought the Colonels back within a point with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Butts at No. 2 before LaChapelle's 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Merrill at No. 4 made it 4-2 in favor of Wentworth. DeLuca dropped the first set at No. 3 to sophomore Alison Daigle Edgartown, Mass.), 6-7 (5-7), however took the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the match. Deakin picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win over Gilbert to complete the match.

Wentworth is at Gordon on Saturday.
