Women's Tennis Battles Worcester State in Season Opener

WESTON, Mass. – After racing out to a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, the Worcester State University women's tennis team picked up four out of six points in singles play and posted a 7-2 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the season opener for both teams.

Junior Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) and sophomore Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) picked up an 8-0 at No.2 doubles over junior Olivia DeLuca (Dunstable, Mass.) and senior Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.). At No. 3, junior Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) teamed with junior Bekah Riley (Ellington, Conn.) to defeat juniors CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.), 8-2. The Lancers completed the sweep when junior Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) and senior Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) were 8-3 winners at No. 1 over junior Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Morgan Collins (Warwick, R.I.).

Worcester State extended its lead to 4-0 when Mularski beat Collins at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1, and clinched the match on a Collings win over McGibbon (6-3, 6-1) at No. 3. Erickson picked up a point for the Leopards at No. 5 when she defeated Mullane, 7-5, 6-3. At No. 6 Lancer junior Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) defeated Deakin, 6-2, 6-1, while Taylor defeated DeLuca at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4. Sollecito rounded out the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alves at No. 1.

The Leopards are at Rhode Island College on Tuesday.
