Sollecito Battles Back to Win in Women's Tennis' Loss to Roger Williams

MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team (2-5, 0-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference) fell, 8-1, to Roger Williams (7-0, 3-0) on Saturday afternoon in CCC action. The Leopards' lone point came at No. 1 singles on a come-from-behind win from junior Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hawks took a 1-0 lead after freshman Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) teamed with junior Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) to defeat Sollecito and freshman Morgan Collins (Warwick, Mass.), 8-1. Roger Williams took a 2-0 lead when senior Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and freshman Emma Place (Francestown, N.H.) defeated junior Olivia DeLuca (Dunstable, Mass.) and senior Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.), 8-1, at No. 2. No. 3 saw senior Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) pair with sophomore Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) to earn an 8-1 win over juniors CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.).
  • Roger Williams extended its lead to 4-0 when Place defeated Collins, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles and Roche's 6-1, 6-0 win over DeLuca at No. 2 clinched the match for the visitors.
  • Junior Morgan Crimmins (Boston, Mass.) defeated Erickson, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5, sophomore Samantha Rivkin (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) defeated Deakin, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6, while Martin was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over McGibbon at No. 3.
  • Sollecito dropped the first set to Cahoon at No. 1, 1-6, however, battled back to force a tiebreaking set with a 6-4 win in the second set. Cahoon led 9-6 in the 10-point tiebreaker before Sollecito fought off match point and eventually won, 14-12.
